The origin of the brand
SAX, an icon of Florentine elegance and craftsmanship, has its heart in the center of one of the most beautiful cities of art in Italy: Florence. Founded in the 60s by Giancarlo Baracchino, SAX created the first authentic boat shoe entirely made in Italy, continuing a tradition of artisanal excellence and style started by his father Luigi in the early 1900s.
Since the 1970s, SAX's signature boat shoe has conquered the world, becoming an indispensable companion for adventurers and dreamers. It is no coincidence that the idea was born from the strong friendship between Giancarlo Baracchino (the brand's founder) and the famous explorer Ambrogio Fogar, who in 1973-1974 circumnavigated the globe alone aboard the Surprise, the sailing vessel from which the SAX boat shoe took its name. The SAX brand has become synonymous with trust, reliability and resistance, just like the shoes it produces.

“SURPRISE”
THE FIRST BOAT SHOE MADE IN ITALY
The SURPRISE model was born in 1977 thanks to the understanding and collaboration between Giancarlo Baracchino and Ambrogio Fogar, who in 1973-1974 circumnavigated the globe alone aboard the Surprise.
The original model was made of waterproof and breathable double-tanned leather, had waterproof leather laces, brass eyelets with antioxidant treatment and stitching with high-strength hand-greased thread.
The sole was made of LATEX rubber with anti-slip characteristics to ensure maximum grip even in the roughest moments of navigation.
The internal structure featured a buttress in anti-mold extruded material that was elastic even when wet, while the lining featured an anti-abrasion jacquard tape with a thermoformed insole in antibacterial and anti-humidity EVA and a RELION insole, a double extruded material that was resistant to water.
